Shag

The Shag, also known as the cormorant, is a common seabird found in coastal regions of New Zealand. They have a distinctive glossy black plumage, a long tail and a hooked bill. They are found around the coast of New Zealand and on offshore islands, and are common on rocky shores, estuaries, and harbours. They can often be seen perched on rocks or swimming on the surface of the water. They have a varied diet that includes fish, squid and crustaceans. The Shag is a strong swimmer, using its webbed feet and wings to dive for food. Some species of shags are considered threatened due to habitat destruction and disturbance on breeding sites, but overall the population is considered stable.
